Meet the Leggings Brand Hollywood It Girls Love to Live In

by Diana Nguyen | Mon., Nov. 6, 2017 6:00 AM

Jacqueline Lee / E!

Which is why you can often spot the celeb set in David Lerner best-sellers. The Los-Angeles-based brand is best known for its fashion-forward leggings. And come this winter, we’ll be sure to see more stars in the brand’s popular vegan offerings and track pants. But how do you get Hollywood It Girls to support your brand in the first place? A lot of dedication and hard work. Here, Jacqueline Krafka, brand director & VP of design, shares what it really takes to be a trendsetter.

My first job was in the swim industry. I was living in Orange County, and the company was called Raisins Swimwear.

What’s the best part about your career?

I get to do what I love and make a living at it. I am always excited for Monday mornings to see what the week will bring. I also love the talented people I have always been surrounded by over the course of my career. They keep me inspired and I have grown through the relationships I have made.

What’s the most daring career risk you’ve taken?

Actually, I would say it is with David Lerner, bringing treatments and concepts from the denim world and applying them to our Spandex legging fabrics. It is a tricky process to produce and something that was not being done in this space.

Jacqueline Lee / E!

Who are your career heroes?

I would say Diane Von Furstenberg. I admire her career and how she created and maintained her aesthetic all these years, yet also has been able to evolve with our ever-changing world and achieved such longevity. I have a lot of respect for her.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

It takes a genius to keep things simple. Do not over complicate things.

What’s a typical day like for you?

I wake up in the wee hours and can’t resist checking my emails, then first thing in the morning it is Instagram. I like to enjoy coffee while checking in with some of our online customers to see how we are looking, then it’s get ready, hit the road taking in phone calls on my commute. Once in the office I try to answer a few more emails and then meet, one by one, with each team member from design, to graphics, production, marketing etc., to strategize the day and week… Fittings, fabric appointments, design review, art approvals. it goes on. I love the constant stimulation. It keeps me on my toes and engaged.

Jacqueline Lee / E!

Well, our office is one division within our parent company Jerry Leigh. We are lucky to get to work in a clean, modern beautiful environment; however, we definitely try to carve out a little David Lerner DNA into our space, with black accents, mood boards everywhere, a wall where we build our graphic story, a comfy fitting area where we can sit as a group and try on everything from production fitting samples to inspiration samples. It is one giant closet. I feel like I am changing my clothes all day every day.

What’s it like to see your clothes on celebrities?

It is the ultimate gratification to see anyone wearing the product. It is a true validation, as there are so many amazing choices out there and especially if it is a celebrity, whom has the ability to wear most anything, it is the best compliment.

Jacqueline Lee / E!

If you could dress anyone—living and dead—who would it be?

Jacqueline Kennedy. my namesake and a true American fashion Icon. She made everything she wore look effortless yet polished. Scrolling back to the best advice I ever received: «It takes a genius to keep things simple.» This is what they meant, and she nailed this concept.

If you had to pick on piece from your collection to truly represent yourself, which what it be?

The Gemma pant in vegan leather: It is classic, easy, versatile, sleek. I’m not sure I see myself exactly as that description, but I’d like to think I try. This pant is the best foundation to any fall wardrobe. I literally get stopped wearing it all the time—a must-have piece.

Jacqueline Lee / E!

Finish the below sentences.

Today for lunch I had. A laugh attack. We sit together every day in a group lunch with each of the heads of the different divisions within our parent company, and can I just say what happens at lunch stays at lunch. It’s the best.

The last thing I Googled was. Hippest new restaurants in Paris (planning for an upcoming trip).

My usual coffee order is. A grande soy cappuccino «wet» please!

If I wasn’t doing this job, I’d be. Annoying my children

List five things on your desk right now. My white pottery/succulent garden, a creativity crystal I bought at the Rose Bowl, a diffuser w/ essential oils, lots of reports and papers everywhere.

The book I’m reading is. I’m getting ready to start Give and Take, by Adam Grant, on my upcoming trip. Travel is the most realistic time for me to read. I’m just too tired during the week and usually overstimulated by the time I get home.

Sounds like a dream job!

Time to Reveal and to Heal

Where do we even begin? The revealing time we are in. Where voices silenced by power, control and intimidation are finally being heard. Where justice is being served. Where even great men fall. But, hopefully, a new day dawns. The great wave of all that has been revealed is not new. It just seems the world is finally, finally, ready to listen. Joe Biden said it best when he said, “We have only succeeded folks, when no woman who is abused, instinctively asks the question, ‘what did I do?’” I remember the first time I heard about sexual assault, I was probably about nine years old; a young university student at the University of Zimbabwe where my parents were academics, she was attacked allegedly because her skirt was too short. And for some reason, many many people felt that was a justifiable explanation for her assaulters to attack. Her skirt was too short.

Most men are not abusive. But far too often, they are silent about the abuse committed by other men. Their silence is as much a part of the problem as the abuse. A Call to Men in partnership with Joyful heart invite men to commit to speak up and speak out. Pledge to break the silence about violence and abuse with these six actions. 1. Reflect | Think critically about the messages you have received about manhood, women, and girls. Challenge and deconstruct the way you have been socialized to view women as objects, property, or having less value than men. Invite other men to do the same…

Bring awareness to the injustices women and girls face around the world.

Bring awareness to the injustices women and girls face around the world.

In anticipation of Valentine’s Day, I’d like to write a love letter to women. As an actress, I have the good fortune of a being able to play a complex, strong and flawed woman. As a writer, scripting narratives is my act of resistance, my way of bringing that unheard African female voice front and center and allowing it to manifest its astounding value. I have always had a passion for women and girls, a hope to see them function on the same playing field as men and have the same opportunities and appropriate protections. I want to be more than an actress and storyteller but an advocate for women, not only in underdeveloped countries but all over the world.

I was born on February 14th, 1978. My father named me Danai, in commemoration of my birth on the day of love and romance; Danai, in my parent’s native tongue, Shona, means to be in love or to love one another. I always embraced this day of teddy bears and excessive red roses as my day. But I have finally figured out a more purposeful meaning of Valentine’s day. This year, and every year to come, I am seeking to reclaim Valentine’s Day, to make it about loving our girls.

There are too many women and girls out there, caught in fundamental injustices with deep inner wounds. This Valentine’s Day, 62 million girls will still be denied the right to get an education, 14 million girls per year will continue to be married off as child brides without a choice, in Northern Nigeria, our girls will still not be brought back and more girls will continue to be abducted and sold in a sex slave market and gang raped in Syria. Girls and young women even in the wealthiest countries in the world will continue to struggle to step into their own authentic confidence. They still won’t have a seat at many tables of decision making and will remain so hyper-sexualized by the media they will turn into people pleasers and become beauty obsessive, neglecting the development of their true abilities, character and power. How is this still the world we inhabit?

Let’s bring about change with love. I want to reclaim Valentine’s Day as a day when we seek to validate our girls and women globally and lessen the gender gap inch by inch. It has to start with love – love being a verb, not a noun. Join me in making women and girls your Valentine, in making the world a better place for just one woman or girl on the globe. Every month, on the 14th, pledge with me to bring awareness to your network of the struggles, experiences or challenges of a girl or woman across the world.

Why Girls Love The Dad Bod

In case you haven’t noticed lately, girls are all about that dad bod. Girls have been dealing with body image issues since the beginning of time until recent (for those of you who consider yourselves to be «Thick thin») I hadn’t heard about this body type until my roommate mentioned it. She used to be crazy over guys she claimed had the dad bod. After observing the guys she found attractive, I came to understand this body type well and was able to identify it. The dad bod is a nice balance between a beer gut and working out. The dad bod says, «I go to the gym occasionally, but I also drink heavily on the weekends and enjoy eating eight slices of pizza at a time.» It’s not an overweight guy, but it isn’t one with washboard abs, either.

The dad bod is a new trend and fraternity boys everywhere seem to be rejoicing. Turns out skipping the gym for a few brews last Thursday after class turned out to be in their favor. While we all love a sculpted guy, there is just something about the dad bod that makes boys seem more human, natural, and attractive. Here are a few reasons that girls are crazy about the dad bod.

We like being the pretty one.

You know what you’re getting.

So there you go. A simple break down of why girls everywhere are going nuts over this body type on males. We like it. We love it. We want some more of it. So here’s to you dad bods, keep it up. Men, confidently strut that gut on the beach because while you stare at us in our bikinis we will be staring just as hard.
